Variable: which direction the wall faces

These take the afternoon sun in July and the leading edge of a storm line in April. A casement left cranked open on that wall is a rigid sail bolted to a small gearbox, and the hinge arm bends before the sash does. If you want casements there, ask for opening limiters and plan on closing them when weather is coming.
South and north walls
On a south wall the glass package matters more than the style. Ask for the solar heat gain coefficient on the NFRC label and treat it as a specification rather than a footnote, because that is the number that decides how hot the room gets in August. North walls get almost no direct sun, which makes them the easiest place to prioritize ventilation and unbroken view over everything else.
Variable: what is standing underneath the window outside
A casement sash projects 15 to 20 inches. That one number disqualifies more openings than any energy argument ever will. Walk the perimeter with a tape and note anything within about two feet of the wall: walkway, deck, patio furniture, driveway apron, condenser, hose bib, downspout, meter, or a shrub line you have no intention of moving.
Hinge side belongs in this decision too. Where you have a choice, hinge the sash to open away from the direction people approach from. On paired units, hinging them to open outward from the center lets them scoop a crosswind instead of blocking each other.
The check that settles it in ten seconds
Open an interior door to about 20 inches and stand where the window is. That is the swing, at roughly the height of your face. If you would not hang a door in that spot, do not put a casement there. Under 24 inches of clear space the sash still opens, but it opens into whatever is in front of it, and the operator arm is the weakest thing in that collision.
Adding the variables up for your Center Grove house
Take a sheet of paper, list every opening, and mark five columns: direction faced, clear space outside, who opens it, whether it gets an air conditioner, and whether it has to meet egress. A double-hung opens to roughly half its glass area. A casement opens to nearly all of it and catches wind running parallel to the wall. Moving in three years pushes the answer toward matching the neighborhood and the elevation, because an appraiser and a buyer look at the front of the house and very little else. There is a middle case worth naming. If a bedroom or a basement room does not meet egress today, that surfaces at sale regardless of your timeline, and it is far cheaper to solve inside a window order than as a repair item negotiated during a transaction.
One resale note worth a sentence. In central Indiana, a mixed order with casements on the back of the house and double-hungs across the front is invisible in a listing and unremarkable in an inspection. An all-casement front elevation on a 1950s ranch is the version that gets commented on.

Reach, height and countertops
Measure sill height and note what stands in front of it. Above roughly 40 inches with a counter, a tub or a cabinet in the way, a double-hung sash becomes a two-hand lift performed at arm length. That is why so many kitchen windows have not been opened since the last owner lived there.
Grip strength and sash weight
A modern vinyl double-hung sash runs roughly 15 to 30 pounds depending on size and glass. With a healthy balance system it feels like a third of that. With a worn balance it feels like all of it and then some. A crank needs very little force but does need a clear path for your forearm, so check blinds, curtain returns and deep sill trim before assuming it is the easier option.
Trade-off: glass area against the look of the street
On the same opening a casement delivers roughly 10 to 15 percent more glass, because no meeting rail crosses the middle. On a rear wall facing a yard, that is free view. On the front of a Colonial, a Cape Cod, a bungalow or a traditional brick ranch, it reads as the wrong window, and it is exactly the kind of thing buyers notice without being able to name.
The usual resolution is to treat the street face as a style decision and every other wall as a function decision. That is not a compromise so much as how most well-planned window orders actually get written.
Trade-off: a tighter seal against more moving parts
What the compression seal buys in a cold snap
A casement locks by pulling the sash into a gasket, so it seals like a door rather than a drawer. On NFRC labels, casements commonly post air leakage around 0.05 to 0.1 cubic feet per minute per square foot while double-hungs from the same family more often land at 0.1 to 0.3. In practice that is not a dramatic utility bill difference. It is the difference between feeling a draft at the meeting rail on a 10 degree night and not feeling one.
Noise follows the same pattern for the same reason. A compression seal usually gives a small advantage on a road-facing wall, but the bigger lever there is glass thickness and an unequal pane pairing, and you can order both of those on a double-hung too.
What the hardware costs at year eighteen
The other half of the trade is that a casement has a gearbox, hinge arms and a multipoint lock, while a double-hung has springs and latches. Casement operators typically run $45 to $120 plus labor when the part is still in production, and can be genuinely hard to source on a discontinued line. Double-hung balances run $20 to $60 a pair and are widely stocked. Tighter seal, more to go wrong. That is the honest version of the comparison, and no showroom will lead with it.
